DERRICK FAVORS

NBA PLAYER

My first client was a 6’5 tie collecting Republican business tycoon from Texas. He beautifully lived up to the stereotypes I had - confident, robust, and a charmer of course. He placed upon me the honor of helping to build his limited edition / rare neckwear collection. He also only wore custom made clothing, so I learned his style and designed his suits and casual wear for each season.

My second client was a laid back, stout, happy, and generous Nigerian businessman and descendent of royalty (technically a Prince). He came to the states to secure a few business deals and was set on ONLY having the best for all his meetings. I outfitted him with 6 impeccably tailored Canali suits + 1 Hickey Freeman (gotta support the home team :-)), 3 pairs of Ferragamos, a new Movado and vintage Piaget timepieces, pocket squares/ties, belts, and two bottles of cologne (one for day meetings, one for evening outings). To top it off I planned his grooming session - simple manly manicure + fresh hair cut.

My third client was a newly promoted Indian-American manager for a 5-star restaurant. He just turned 30 and just received a promotion so he decided it was time to take his style to a new level. A new wardrobe of business and business casual looks to compliment his new decade and job title was priority. He also wanted a “go to” brand that would make future shopping easier. Given his slim 5’10 physique I went with Hugo Boss, with a few casual pieces from Facconable. To tickle the fancy of his clientele’s demographic (old money Southern men) I suggested a few Vineyard Vine ties— which he later told me were often complimented on, especially by his big-budget clients.

I have a genuine appreciation for nearly all types of styles. I love mixing trends from the past with the trends of now. I love to mix cultures as well... For example: a Swahili print, in Swedish silhouettes, styled in an American way.

When I create editorial spreads my vision expands beyond what he wears, its about the story - what he is doing? where is he going? what is he trying to say? I’m meticulous about everything from the wall art to the books in the background to the way his shoes are tied. There are many times when I play role of director, stylist, and photographer. And I do this because I want to catch him at a specific moment. The moment comes only a few seconds per minute... it’s when confidence, style, and vulnerability collide. I love that moment, its everyone’s greatest moment. I’m great at creating and capturing it :-).

FASHION WEEK TREND SURVEYING / PHOTOGRAPHY

Urban Prep. I coined the term back in 2008. Its the foundation of Urban Gentleman style - a mix of preppy style and street wear, paying special attention to tailoring and details. As an online men’s fashion pioneer, I helped the world visualize this style... this continues today.
